Athens and Sounio, full-day, private tour 🇬🇷
Early in the morning, we climb to the glorious Acropolis hill, one of the most significant Unesco’s World Heritage Archaeological Site with an outstanding universal value, where we are impressed by the greatest and finest sanctuary of ancient Athens, the Parthenon, dedicated primarily to its patron, the virgin goddess Athena, the Temple of the Athena Nike, Propylaea, the monumental gateway, as well as the Erechtheion. At the slope of Acropolis, we sightsee the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
Then, we wind down through Kerameikos archaeological site reaching Thisio where we visit the Ancient Agora, with the Stoa of Attalos, the first-ever shopping arcade as well as the Temple of Hephaistos, the best-preserved temple in Greece standing largely as built.
We drive to Panepistimiou street, one of the most historical streets of Athens where we see numerous neoclassical buildings and arcades but most importantly the Trilogy of Athens, the Academy of Science, the University of Athens and the National Library. Afterward, we go to see the Temple of Zeus, the Arch of Hadrian as well as the Panathenaic Stadium, Aristotle’s Lyceum and driving alongside the National Garden we have a quick stop at the Greek Parliament to regard the Changing of the Guards “Evzones”.
Moving on, we steer towards via a scenic seaside drive to the Saronic Gulf which will take us to the archaeological site of Cape Sounio, the southeastern edge of the Attica Peninsula. Passing through the uptown suburbs of Athens, Glyfada, Voula, Varkiza, crossing the coastline known as the Athenian Riviera, we have a stop at the magnificent natural landscape of Vouliagmeni’s lake to enjoy the rare geological phenomenon.
We continue our tour by reaching the Cape of Sounio where we take a break to have our lunch at the junction of the 2 seas between the Saronic Gulf and the Aegean Open Sea. Then, we visit the sacred archaeological site where we admire the dominating Temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea (and of water generally), earthquakes, and horses, surrounded by the remains of fortifications as well as the gateway (porticos). Apart from the unique location and if we are lucky, we will stare at the romantic and breathtaking sunset. The Temple of Poseidon was designated a Unesco’s World Heritage Archaeological Site in 2014, as part of Ancient Lavrion. Nearby there are also the remains of the temple Athena Souniada.
At this point, we get our way back and if you still have the strength and mood for further explorations in the paved old city of Athens, we drop you off in Plaka, optionally, as our final stop.
*Significant Note: A minimum participation of 2 people is necessary for the private tour to be performed. This is a private tour.
