Epidaurus, Mycenae and Nafplio, full-day, private tour 🇬🇷
Early in the morning, we start our tour to the peninsula of Peloponnese, which is rich in ancient history, outstanding landscapes, crystal clear seas and sandy beaches. On our way, we cross a part of one of the most important processional roads in ancient Greece, the Sacred Way (ancient Iera Odos) in which we regard the Sanctuary of Aphrodite outside Eleusis. We have a quick stop to walk across the pedestrian bridge of the exquisite Corinth Canal that separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the rest of Greece and connects the Saronic Gulf with the Corinthian Sea.
We depart for the UNESCO’s World Heritage archaeological site of Epidaurus where we visit the best-preserved ancient Theater with exceptional acoustics, which is located at the north end of the sanctuary dedicated to the therapist god of antiquity, Asclepius, a Unesco’s World Heritage Archaeological Site. Inside the Archaeological site, we admire the Tholos, the Asclepion, which is the first hospital as well as the Archaeological Museum.
Moving on, we drive to the famous city of Mycenae, also called the ‘gold-rich’ palatial center, the legendary capital of Atrides, a great contribution to Greek culture. Inside the archaeological site, we admire the Lions’ Gate (the oldest architectural sculpture in Europe), the Cyclopean Walls, the Religion Centre of Mycenae, the remains of Agamemnon’s Palace and the Tomb of Clytemnestra. Just a few steps before the Lions’ Gate we meet the Archaeological Museum that exhibits among others the golden funeral mask of King Agamemnon. Before departing for Nafplio, we have a quick stop at the Treasure of Atreus, the most impressive of the preserved Mycenaean tholos tombs and one of the finest epitomes of the Mycenaean architecture.
We depart for the scenic city of Nafplio, which functioned as the capital of Greece until 1834. We take a break to enjoy our lunch as well as some free time to take a stroll through the picturesque narrow streets, the port and Bourtzi.
Finally, we to take the road back to Athens with a stopover at Acronafplia, also called the castle of Palamidi, in order to admire the outstanding panoramic view of the city as well as its surroundings and take commemorative photos.
If you still have the strength and mood for further explorations in the paved old city of Athens, we drop you off in Plaka, optionally, as our final stop.
*Significant Note: A minimum participation of 2 people is necessary for the private tour to be performed.
