Marathon and Sounio, full-day, private tour 🇬🇷
Early in the morning, we drive towards Marathon Avenue, which constitutes the actual and original Marathon running race that was conceived in modern times based on the Pheidippides route, reaching the Marathon battlefield, where the most deciding battle for the future of both Greece and Europe was held in September 490 BC. between Greeks and Persians, and is considered the turning point of world history. Inside the archaeological site of Marathon, we admire the Tumulus of Athenians and then we visit the Marathon Archaeological Museum in which the exhibits date back from the Prehistoric to the Late Roman era.
We continue our tour by reaching the ancient theater in Thorikos, which is the oldest known theatre in existence, located north of the ancient mining town of Lavrio. Afterward, we have a quick stop at the center of Lavrio, which in antiquity was famous for its rich silver mines, some of the oldest in the world. Nowadays, Lavrio has ubiquitous cafes and restaurants most of them in restored old houses in the paved streets of the town, while private yaughts are gracing the harbor. At this point, we take a break to enjoy our lunch.
Moving on, we drive to the archaeological site of Cape Sounio, the southeastern edge of the Attica Peninsula, to visit the dominating Temple of Poseidon, the god of the sea (and of water generally), earthquakes, and horses, surrounded by the remains of fortifications as well as the gateway (porticos). Apart from the unique location and if we are lucky, we will stare at the romantic and breathtaking sunset. The Temple of Poseidon was designated a Unesco’s World Heritage Archaeological Site in 2014, as part of Ancient Lavrion. Nearby there are also the remains of the temple Athena Souniada.
We get our way back to Athens with a stop at the magnificent natural landscape of Vouliagmeni’s lake to enjoy the rare geological phenomenon and then we steer towards via a scenic seaside drive passing through the uptown suburbs of Athens, Varkiza, Voula, Glyfada, crossing the coastline known as the Athenian Riviera where we have our final stop at the ‘Stavros Niarchos’ foundation cultural center.
Our tour has come to its end and if you still have the strength and mood for further explorations in the paved old city of Athens, we drop you off in Plaka, optionally, as our final stop.
*Significant Note: A minimum participation of 2 people is necessary for the private tour to be performed.
