Mystras is a Byzantine castle town outside the city of Sparta and constitutes one of UNESCO’s WORLD HERITAGE Archaeological Site. This unique beauty castle was built in 1249 by the Prince of the Franks William W Blearduinus, who also raised a strong wall on the eastern side of Taygetus. This castle was the capital of the Byzantine Despotate of Mystras in the 14th and 15th centuries and experienced a period of prosperity and cultural blossom. In 1830, the castle town of Mystras was abandoned and the rebuilding of the new city of Sparta began, about 8 kilometers east. In Mystras, UNESCO’s WORLD HERITAGE Archaeological Site, there are 7 historically important churches as well as the homonym museum of Mystras.
