Sounio, also known as Kavos, located at the Saronic Gulf, delivers a unique sense of the greatness of nature. Steep rocks that flow out of the water, an endless light blue horizon and a magnificent temple, the Temple of Poseidon, the finishing touch of this wonderful art of nature.
The first time we come across the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio is through the writings of Homer specifically referred to as the “Sunni Temple” in the writings of the Odyssey. Menelaos is said to have buried the captain of his ship in Sounio, upon his return from the war of Troy. Findings from the archaic period when Sounio was first created are found in the archaeological museum of Athens. During the Macedonian wars, Sounio and its temples were destroyed, but the Athenians, wanting to show how much they loved the god of the sea, thus, they rebuilt the last Temple of Poseidon which we admire to this today.
Sounio was founded by the Leontinian tribe, and later by the Attalida tribe. Little can be said about the endless history of the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio that will do it justice. Come and join us in this fascinating adventure and admire one of the most beautiful sunsets at the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio which can be witnessed in the Greek land.
